
As the first woman ever, Kathryn Bigelow wins Best Director Oscar for the low-budget film the Hurt Locker.
She also beat her ex-husband James Cameron, who directed Avatar. “The Hurt Locker” won six Oscars, including best screenplay, while “Avatar” earned three awards. But Cameron, who sat behind Bigelow at the ceremony, was one of the first to offer congratulations.
Bigelow described the award as a “moment of a lifetime” and dedicated her Oscar to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. “May they come home safe,” she said.
